As an independent BYU basically played 12 exhibition games every fall, in reality they were eliminated from the playoff before the season started and from NY6 after our first lost. We were locked into a lame bowl game and therefore the schedule became paramount. We needed interesting opponents or interesting locations to keep the fan base engaged. This was what mattered most for the last decade plus.
All that changes in 2023. The thing that matters is winning the B12. That's should be the focus of every scheduling, recruiting, or building decision moving forward. If we want to play in a NY6? Win the B12. Playoffs? Win the B12.
We should care about those three non conference games but in the grand scheme they don't matter that much. Winning conference games is going to get us where we want to be.
