Top two teams vs two division winners doesn't move the needle much. The better approach is: IF YOU WIN, YOU ARE IN. And since we (Cougarboard) are calling the shots, let's do it. Starting in December 2023:

16 teams will receive playoff bids: The winners of the Top 8 conferences + 8 Wildcards.
(or 6+10, or 5+11, whatever. But I vote for 8+8.)

Who the "Top 8" conferences are would be based on each conference's 3-year average OOC* record (with some SIMPLE smart parameters to adjust for opponent strength and home/away.) Needless to say the "Power 5" would always qualify —because of talent, not privilege. The fact that an objective ranking of conferences would now actually impact the playoffs... this would lead to NUMEROUS benefits. (Think it through and you'll get it. Separate subject.)

Sports boards and media are flooded with controversy. Good.

Saturday: SEEDING NIGHT, LIVE! A separate Seeding Committee announces seeding, brackets and venues.
Sports boards continue to freak out with controversy. Good.

The G5 teams would likely be seeded #14-#16, but not necessarily. The "Group of 5" has won 3 of the 8 NY6 Games against "Power 5" teams.

Monday: BRACKETMANIA seizes the nation. Vegas stocks soars. Sports paraphernalia stocks soars. Travel stocks soars. Elon Musk offers $10,000 for every perfect bracket submitted (15 games).

About two weeks between games allows for recovery but avoids the long layoff rust that has spoiled so many big games in recent years.

To satisfy Power 5 greed, payouts could escalate steeply between rounds; i.e. Round of 16 participants get a Built Bar and a pat on the back. Elite 8 teams get a billion dollars...

Reality: The post-season has been dead as a doornail since the introduction of the BCS in the 90s. It saddens me to see so much potential wasted because of greed and a lack of innovation. And the wild west NIL craziness is only expediting the implosion of college football. We fans are the losers. Something has to change.
