First down defense directly translates to 3rd down though
You give up five yards on first down every time, then they only need five more on two more attempts. Almost impossible to keep 3rd down conversion rate down if the only team only ever needs a couple of yards.

The thing BYU's defense needs to improve the most (and there really isn't a close second) is 1st down rush defense

Maybe don't put the LBs so deep, and teach them to play downhill. And let's hope the DL can get off a block.

I would much rather stop 3rd and short 50% of the time and give up more yards the other 50% of the time.
