Was simply that George Lucas was into special effects and less concerned about acting and dialogue. Hence, the sequel movies with great actors falling flat.

Critique about canon is separate. I wasn't sure who made the call to canonize only the movies and let the novels have their own separate story line: lucas or Disney?

Either way, throwing out thrawn and mara jade...could have made some really great movies with the content from the novels.
