Current NY law requires you to retreat before deadly self-defense
So if you intervene and the person ends up dying as a result (say they hit their head on the ground hard), you'll almost certainly go to jail.
Plus current policies basically let criminals roam free in NYC right now. Why bother intervening if the guy is just going to be back on the street within an hour on $1 bail? You risk getting hurt yourself or getting arrested yourself if things go bad.
