I first got life insurance 16 years ago right after my first child was born. I was 27 at the time. I didn't really shop around much, but got a quote from USAA for term and signed on with them. Cost was around $95/mo for $1M. Then I got another $1M term policy from Northwestern Mutual because an old highschool "friend" kept bugging me about his "services."
About 6-7 years ago I stupidly canceled both plans when money got tight. Every time I heard about a father dying young I had a twinge of guilt but laziness kept me from getting a plan again. A few times, I signed onto policy genius, but I would never past the point where you have to talk to an agent on the phone (again, laziness!) so I didn't get a plan.
Until today! Now, as a 43-year-old, I got a $1.5M 20-year term policy from Brighthouse for $114/mo. No health examination or anything. I was shocked at the price--I thought it would be so much more expensive due to my increased age. If you're not covered, get covered. Your family will thank you!
