It's a giant plot hole because they came up with the back story for Luke after they filmed and released ANH.
The same real reason why Ben claimed Vader killed Luke's father. It wasn't until later that Lucas decided to change that detail with a plot twist and we get Ben's convoluted "certain point of view" explanation.
