It's probably like kids from the 90's who were into the Beatles, Led Zep, etc.
I graduated from HS in the early 90's and I remember a lot of kids that thought they were being cool/retro by really getting into bands like the Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, etc. once they found out that those bands inspired the grunge music that they were listening to.
