It's wise to ask about gaps in employment. I did so in a recent interview with a woman who said it was because she took time to care for her family. I believe everyone is telling you "No" in response to how you phrased the question in your original post. I wouldn't ask "how did you provide for your family" and instead take note of the employment gap and ask if there's a reason for that gap. If the answer seems out of the norm then it could be a red flag. A reference check with her last employer could also help, depending on how forthright they are with you.
