They are small fish in a big sporting market with professional teams of all sports they have to compete with

for viewership. Contrast that with Alabama—not a single major league sport in the state. UofA and, to a lesser extent Auburn, therefore, dominate. Some could bring the viewership despite the competing sporting franchises—not sure about Cal and Stanford.
