Unlike the team up north, I'm not delusional enough to believe that BYU will be
Invited to the B1G or the SEC during my life (I'm 40).

However, if consolidation narrowed college football into two conferences and two conferences only, what would BYU have to do to position themselves for an invite?

Looking at expansion over the last year, only one of the four schools has made the CFP, OU (4 appearances). Last year, two of the four schools had losing records UT 5-7, and USC 4-8. Therefore, I don't believe winning a bunch of games is a strict requirement.

However, these teams seem to have a few things in common.

First, value. In 2021 Forbes valued each Team as follows:
UCLA: $40 million (annual, 2019, not even top 5 in the Pac).
USC: $93 million (annual)
OU: $129 million (annual)
UT: $147 million (annual)

With the exception of UCLA, the three other schools round out the top 25 in value among all other programs.

Over the last few days, we've heard a lot about TV markets. It's no surprise that LA is the #2 market. However, the same can't be said for Norman (44) and Austin (38).

Of course there are many many factors I haven't taken into consideration. But, the principle remains that these teams either had high value or a good TV market. These teams also left with a rival school.

A team like Utah only has the rivalry. They don't crack the Forbes top 25 top value list (neither does BYU) and they are not in the top five of the Pac. In terms of TV markets, SLC is #33. This presents a similar predicament for BYU.

However, unlike Utah, I believe the B12 brings renewed opportunities for re-branding and an injection of B12 revenue sharing. With the exception of UCLA, all the teams had an annual revenue value near or exceeding $100m. This should be BYU's goal. Become a strong national brand. I believe the resources are in line to allow this to happen, but we need to get out to the games, buy merch, donate to CC, etc.

Like the kid who peaked in high school, I believe Utah has reached their max potential. Remaining in the Pac or going to the B12, SEC, or B1G is not going to earn them many more fans, season ticket holders, donors, or recruits. As result, their ability to get into the SEC or B1G is limited and will likely never happen.
