“For You” page now is really good at showing me content that I’m interested in (business, food, sports, etc), and I don’t see a lot of the crap you described above. A few tips:

1) If you see something you don’t want to watch, swipe out of the video quickly. Like immediately. It will signal to the algo it’s not something you’re interested in.

2) Videos you do like, watch them all the way through, even 2 or 3 times. Watch/rewatch is one of the top signals of the algo that it’s content you want to see

3) Like all videos you enjoy, and hit the save button if you really like it.

4) Follow content creators that make content that you like. Watch and like their videos.

In a week or so, you’ll start to see more of what you want to see. It’s funny - TikTok has become the new “Google it” for me with all things DIY (house fixes, cooking, etc).
