True. Rice was the SWC's version of the SEC's Tulane/Vandy. Houston and SMU were
solid, but SMU had just been ko'd with the death penalty.
TCU hadn't been good for a long time.
Still, SMU or TCU would have been in over Baylor if not for political interference.
SMU is truly a casualty of bad timing. In 2022, they get a slap on the wrist and would be a very attractive program.
But it happened in 1987, and so they may be left on the outside forever.
