coordinators and position coaches.
Tuiaki didn’t just have an aha moment this week in preparation for Baylor. He’s been around high level football long enough as a player and a coach that he’s been exposed to it all many times before.
What we saw last night is A)an improved overall defensive personnel versus other struggling Tuiaki led defenses and B) Among those on the improved defense, we saw guys make big plays that have not been made as consistently in recent years largely due to lack of talent and ability particularly on the D line.
At the end of the day, players make plays or they miss the opportunities. The coaches do the best they can to recruit the players that will get the job done and thus make them look good but at the end of the day it’s mostly on the players to get it done.
A friend of mine coaches college football and last summer shared with me that he was the most beloved on the staff by the fans during multiple years of having NFL talent. Said the year he lost all upperclassman to the draft or injury he became the fans least favorite coach even though nothing about his coaching had changed at all.
Another example is Harvey Unga. To fans who lack knowledge, he looked like a stud with Tyler Algieir in the backfield but last night those same fans would be questioning “what is wrong with Unga?” and of course the answer is his personnel and their abilities are much different.
