The uncomfortable drama in the world of chess was elevated a notch today when Magnus Carlsen resigned his game vs Hans Niemann in today's Julius Baer Generation Cup after white's second move.
As you all are aware, this follows Carlsen's shocking withdrawal from the Sinquefield Cup earlier this month, following a controversial loss to Niemann where many believed the young quasi-prodigy had assistance in defeating the reigning world champion. Carlsen was silent on the reason for his withdrawal from that tournament, but his actions today speak volumes. He does not trust Hans.
Niemann had, of course, admitted to cheating in prior online matches, but has stubbornly maintained his innocence in over-the-board play.
So you may ask, just because Niemann had cheated in his younger years, does that mean he necessarily cheated again?
Yes. Yes it does. Once a cheater, always a cheater. Ask your divorced lady friends. Niemann should be shunned from the chess community, much like Sergey Karjakin after his pro-Putin tirades.
