This is correct, you can actually put and chip on the green of a hole so long as you have completed that hole
You can do the same if there is a practice green between two holes, So long as you don’t slow down the pace of play.
Don’t practice a bunker shot though, that is not allowed. You also cannot practice at all on a hole that is not completed.

you have to be careful, because some courses or some tournaments will have local rules prohibiting practice
