When I coached, I’d sit a Kid for popping off at a ref. BUT, I’d tell them ….
… in earshot of the ref, and loud enough to be clearly heard, “it’s my job to tell them how horrible that call was, not yours.”

Of course, I only did this when I thought the player was right. Maybe I was a bad coach, but it would allow me to make my point without confronting the ref personally. Plus, my players enjoyed it.
