IMO, he brought Tuiaki with him because they were friends and knew Tuiaki would be
loyal to him. Tuiaki went with him from utah when Kalani was first made a DC at Oregon St (which was not that successful) and then came with him to BYU when Kalani was made a HC for the first time. He was an easy hire for Kalani to repay the loyalty.

Tuiaki's defensive overall stats haven't been horrible for the most part simply because of our schedule. We've had just enough weaker G5 or FCS teams to balance out how bad we are against P5 teams. He's also been fortunate that our offense has been so dominate lately or games like Virginia last year would stand out more. He's also been fortunate that our schedule varies so much year to year. If opposing OCs saw his defenses every year, it would make exploiting it easier.

Look at Tuiaki's resume before coming to BYU. NO other FBS team would hire a guy with that weak of a resume to be a DC other than his good friend. It's not surprising no other team has come to hire him away from BYU. He'd better improve a great deal before next year or his defense will be exposed even more than it already has been.
