Modern French take on a Greek tragedy, about three brothers whose youngest brother is killed on camera by cops. Oldest is a drug dealer, middle is a soldier returning from Mali, and youngest is the ringleader of a violent response to the killing in the banlieue they live in.
The opening sequence is guys from the banlieue breaking into a police station during a press conference about the killing, and then making off with guns, body armor, etc. All in one shot, probably the most impressive of the year. Whole movie has tons of long, amazingly choreographed shots (the whole thing basically takes place from late afternoon to morning). In the end I though Les Miserables, a similar movie from a couple years ago (not the Hugo one), was a bit better, but Athena is more impressive filmmaking. Some of the best large-ish scale action sequences since Fury Road. I don't think it quite works in terms of earning a real emotional response and some of the themes are maybe a bit played out, but the set pieces are as good as you'll find.
Even if you don't watch the whole thing, you should watch the opening sequence up through the title card.
Same director made The World Is Yours, one of the most underappreciated movies of the last few years IMO.
