I do think sometimes coordinators want to reward a player who has been
responsible for big chunks of the drive to get the chance to score the touchdown to cap off that drive.

Logic says you shouldn't allow emotion to cause you to call a play for a reason like that and you should call the play with the best chance of success (based on all of the factors, including surprise). But I certainly feel it myself when someone gets a huge run or catch and gets pulled down just short of the endzone — I want that guy to get the ball on the next play and get the score. I suspect that some OCs operate this way a bit too.
