You are looking at maybe $300 in parts (depending on whats wrong)
If you have access to a lift its probably doable by most people (it is a VW.. there are about 1000 videos on youtube showing how to do it).
If it was me, i would take it to a good 'low cost' VW specialist and pay the ~$1k (most is going to be labor)

It's easy to replace worn parts. Buy them from rockauto and use Youtube

$4K. You can have all new Bilstein with coils on all 4 corners for ~$1K installed.

Replace the shocks with coilovers. Slam it and tint the windows. He'll love it
