A couple of interesting things to me about open source projects/efforts:
1. That guys spend their whole lives working on a single (often relatively obscure) project, many times in their spare time and without pay
2. Open source projects like that almost always seem to be full of drama, with guys dividing into competing camps with leaders and minions, all of which are willing to die (metaphorically) on whatever hill they are obsessed with.
