They played a high line to congest Messi’s area to work and then offside trapped the heck out of the Argentines. Argentina had like 3 goals called back due to offsides. This served to frustrate them and sapped some of their energy. It was terribly risky, but they don’t sniff a result against Argentina by just hunkering in, gotta take risks.
What is brilliant is with the advanced offside line technology, offside trapping is not as risky as it used to be. I think you’re going to see more teams doing this in the future. I don’t love it as a watcher of the game, but I have to tip my hat to the idea and game plan.
