They wanted their move to the P12 to result in BYU fading away. If that happened, then Utah became the undisputed big dog of Utah and many non-Utah lds athletes. They felt playing the rivalry game was too much of an advantage/risk for BYU.

Fortunately BYU did enough to maintain relevance and not fade away. Otherwise their plan may have worked.
