"Titanic" is what did it for me.
The Academy lost all credibility to me when it awarded that film and James Cameron best picture. Never looked at Oscar the same way since. I can't stand Cameron's films.
"Popular" does not equal "great film." Special effects and story-telling after the iceberg hit was compelling, everything leading up to that was a waste of time. So, so contrived and manipulative. For me, it is a completely empty, emotionally hollow film until the real, historical story begins.
