if you as a parent, want to pick up your son or daughter and travel with them using your own schedule or itinerary, you become responsible for making the arrangements. You can submit a request for reimbursement. The church will reimburse you for what they would have paid if they were flying the missionary home regardless of the cost of your travel.

That's how it worked for me anyway.
