where to put it.
Initially, I was going to put it in my backyard, in a flat area that is basically right outside my back door. It would take up a sizeable portion of the yard, and would also basically get rid of the idea of ever putting a pool in the backyard sometime in the future, which I would put the odds of doing at 30%. So, not super likely to do a pool ever, but possible. But the location is very private, tucked behind a row of 8 ft tall bushes. This spot is where I would definitely put it if I was on an acre or two, and had options. Since I'm on a quarter acre...
Recently, I started thinking about putting the pickleball court in my driveway. I have a side loading garage, and the driveway that has a nice long runway and is very flat. Driveway is also probably 15-20 years old, and could use a complete redo, although I could probably go another 5-10 years without doing it, since driveways are just sorta meh for me. But, in light of the option to combine the new driveway with the pickleball court, seems like it's a twofer.
Here's the rub for me on the driveway location:
1. It's not private at all. We have apartments nearby and get a lot of walker/dogwalkers past our home. So, it's sort of exposed.
2. I would like to do a tennis court coated finish, too. I don't really like the feel of sport court tiles for pickleball. The ball doesn't bounce right sometimes, if you get a dead tile, which happens alot. Can I park cars on a tennis court finish? I bet that isn't good for it long term. but maybe that doesn't matter? Any harm to the surface from car tires?
3. I would have to drive over the court to put the car in the garage, which admittedly I have never done in 11 years owning the home - never once parked in the garage. I didn't grow up in a house with a garage. I'm not used to it, but I also wouldn't be opposed to parking there, if I could figure out what the heck to go with all the kids bikes, toys, balls etc. I have a 2 car garage.
4. If I don't park on the pickleball court, I only have space for 2 cars, where now I have space of 6 or more (again, assuming I don't park on the court)
5. Maybe I ditch the tennis court finishing and just go with regular asphalt, which should be a fine surface for pickleball amateurs, and allows for parking wherever...
So, CB, if I do this, should I put it in the exposed driveway area, or the private backyard?
