...very balanced hitting from both MB's and pin hitters. Also good blocking all around. McKendree isn't a good gauge but it was a good opponent to open with and be able to work on somethings. 2nd match was with #14 Lewis which is a good program and a better level of competition. We beat them 3-1 and won the last 2 sets 25-17 each. All 3 pin hitters (Benson, Browne and Ramanis) hit double digit kills for the match. Serving was good (7 aces), defensively we kept the ball off the floor and had 13 blocks. We finished the match really strong. Very encouraging after seeing the team struggle so much last year. You could see the guys gaining confidence as the match progressed.
The matches last weekend were against Fairleigh Dickinson who have a fairly new program and they were clearly outmatched. It was a good chance for BYU to get freshman Trent Moser some action. He is a really good all around player and will be needing playing time. He didn't hit great in the first match against FDU but blocked well and was 2nd in digs. He did lead the team in kills in the 2nd match (led the team in digs on the weekend). Guy is going to be a star.
The transfer setter from Grand Canyon (Heath Hughes) is really smooth and handled everything while rarely putting up a bad set. Guys got good swings on his sets consistently throughout the match even when out of system. They're going to be really fun to watch this season.
