I almost chose USU for that very reason
I took two trips up to Logan for campus tours. Each was exceptional - people were waiting for me, expecting me by name ("You must be reddead"), and a lot went into them. I learned about fun campus traditions, saw some cool new buildings (the "BARN" library and the new fitness center - the "HPER"?) and some awesome old ones (Old Main is the best building on a college campus in Utah). The tour included housing information and ended with a free meal in the student cafeteria. They offered tickets to athletic events, well-designed brochures and stickers, and put a lot into creating a personal connection with each person in the tour.

By contrast, my visit at BYU was insanely underwhelming. I got driven around campus for about 10 minutes in a golf cart by a student who obviously didn't care, and then received a stretch Y sticker and a "thanks for coming" drop-off at the Hinckley building.

I still ended up choosing BYU, though - so maybe they know what they're doing and have optimized the amount of effort invested into recruiting.
