Sugar soda is fine. It only became an issue when Americans became gluttons.
Nobody back in 1950 with their 8 ounce bottle of Coke thought that within 30 years people would be drinking it by the gallon like water every day. So yeah, maybe if you have an excess soda problem give the diet a try. But if you aren't a glutton, the sugar in a moderate amount of soda is trivial.
