My weather degree gets rarely used, so Texas ice storms....
People like to poke fun of Texans during winter moments. Lots of good defenses: 1) Texans are unfamiliar with driving in the snow, 2) no snow plows, and 3) why even go outside anyway?

The truth of it is that we have different ground temps.

Here in DFW, we don't have a true winter (even though we get significantly more annual precipitation than, say, SLC, and about as much as Seattle). This means that when a snow or ice storm moves in, it may have been 80 degrees the week before, unlike in colder climes, where the air temps help drive down the grown temperature.

Accordingly, when snow or ice falls in Texas, it almost instantly melts. If the air temps are low (26 degrees right now where I'm at), that melted snow refreezes, thus creating an ice rink. In places like Idaho, snow falls and it stays snow.

Having lived in several winter climates, including Utah and Idaho, I can attest that it's easier for a Texan to drive on snow than a yankee to drive on ice.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day while we enjoy 3 days of working (or not working) from home.
