It makes sense if you look at it from the perspective of effort required to make that money. He gets $80k more because
it's commission based and he has to actually put in effort to earn $80k. But the $5k wasn't based on effort. It felt like getting free money. If he stopped working as hard he wouldn't make the 80k, but would still get the $5k. It's definitely logical. People like having options, even if they never exercise them.
