**After two very entertaining and successful seasons, 2022 was a frustrating one. What went wrong**
BYU went 8-5, including a win over SMU in the New Mexico Bowl.
"Adversity hits all the time, and it’s how you respond to it that’s key. I’m really proud of the way we played and competed. The results of the games didn’t go the way we wanted them to, but the guys played their butts off. I can work with that. The result of the game comes down to inches, momentum, small little factors, and I keep coming back to the fact that it comes down to the fundamentals for us. Nobody is immune from adversity. I want to get to the point where we’re used to it and we can respond to it quicker. It was a good learning experience for our guys. Going into this season, I guess it gives me more to talk about and reflect upon. You learn about heat and how something can burn you by actually getting burned. We’d be foolish to not capitalize on the opportunity to learn from last year."
**You parted ways with one of your best and oldest friends in former defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki. That’s a position most people never have to deal with. Looking back, how emotional was that experience for you?**
"Change is hard. It always is. I’m the kind of person that, when I work with you, I can’t work with someone unless I make them my friend. I still have those relationships. But my responsibility will always be to the players and to the team. That’s where I have to think about them first. My responsibility is to them and the fan base."
