You had to move across the map on a path that bottlenecks at large fortresses in Mordor. Good luck breaking in. But there was a special card that would let you cross under the mountains. So if you went to the Brown Lands, and just went under the mountains, boom, you were right there to drop the Ring at Mt. Doom.

Of course, the legitimacy of this loophole was hotly contested, and a few disputes may have been settled by combat.
