The baseball analogy really fits the NBA GOAT discussion pretty well
The timelines aren't analogous, but the players have pretty good analogs.

Jordan-Ruth: legend of mythical status who people attribute superhuman ability to in their counterfactual arguments
Kareem-Aaron: Prolific record-holder probably underappreciated because he never had any single eye-popping moment but rather was just absolutely excellent for a very long time
Kobe-Mays: Crazy talented superstar with a magnetic personality and a great work ethic; elite stats, but not the absolute top
LeBron-Bonds: Freakishly talented superstar who people blame for "taking shortcuts" when he saw that sticking with where he was had no chance of taking him where he wanted to go, but wound up getting the most important individual record in the game
Russell-Reggie Jackson: dynasty engine with great stats but not usually thought of as GOAT stats but who turned things up a notch or three in the postseason

I think Shaq and Wilt and Steph probably have good analogs, but I need to move on with my day now.
