Another guy my age and I drove a truck around all day. We were supposed to be pumping out manholes that had filled with water when their pressure relief valves had blown off a little pressure. But we'd literally drive the truck around for a couple hours listening to the radio, then eventually pump out a manhole or two — we'd pull up to the manhole, drop off the pump, drive the truck down the street wherever we could find shade, go back and start the pump, climb back into the truck and fall asleep until the sound of the pump cavitating woke us up. Then we'd go drive for a couple more hours. We'd only have to work hard when there was a line break somewhere and the main crew called us on the radio or when the city was resurfacing streets and we'd have to drive around dropping metal riser rings to raise the level of the manhole covers. But sometimes we'd pass the main crew in their truck multiple times in the same morning — they were just cruising around doing what we were doing 😉
