This was my COVID project. I looked at Synology and QNAP and almost got one, but ended up buying
- computer case, fans, motherboard, cpu, heat sink past, cpu cooler, power supply, RAM memory, six 6 TB Redwolf hard drives plus two 500 GB solid state drives, etc.
- my boys and I built the computer,
- then bought an Unraid license
- it booted up first try
I have four data drives and two parity drives, so I could lose two out of sux drives and still be OK.
I run my ubiquity/Unifi network controller in a docker on the server. I also have Plex running in a docker, and we have had our own Minecraft server up and running a few times in a docker. I also have a virtual machine set up running windows 10 I thought about making it my primary desktop, but so far just played around with it.
We have four PCs that do back ups to the server on a weekly basis.
Note that a lot of guys start out building an Unraid system using an old desktop computer and whatever hodgepodge of old hard drives, they have lying around
