Honestly i appreciate the opportunity to converse. Differing views are what CB
Is all about, really. I have a lot of family members who share your views and mostly parrot what they hear on Fox or OAN or NewsMax (not saying you are parroting, solely describing my family members here). They never tune in to other channels to hear other perspectives, never consider the motives of the people and media companies feeding their fears and conspiracy ideas to stir up viewers and make more $. They don’t see the inherent danger of a president who refuses to concede office peacefully even after every court challenge failed, nor did they see the danger in a mob trying to use violence to keep their preferred person in power and harm anyone who opposes him, regardless of party. I fear for my relatives who have these views and are so blinded by what their preferred news providers tell them that they literally hate people in the other party and want to harm them or have harm come to them. Anyway, this is where I am coming from. I used to be an active GOP member, but the GOP is not what it was back then and I’ve been independent of parties for 30+ years now. The current GOP and its main figure bear no resemblance to the “party of Lincoln” as it claims. It absorbed all the former Southern Dixiecrats who left the Democratic Party because of Johnson’s support for the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and desegregating schools and universities. They nearly all migrated to the GOP and changed it forever. Now the GOP is obsessed with fighting “woke” wars, scaring people into believing CRT is being taught in public schools (it’s not), scaring people into hating and fearing immigrants and wanting to build a wall to protect white Christian America from being “mongrelized”, and using dishonest terms to convince its base that Democrat is a synonym for Socialist, which of course it is not. Elder Faust was not a socialist, he was a Democrat. There are very good people in the Church who are Democrats, not Socialists. Those terms are used to stir up anger and fear, but they are not true and they are leading to more and more political violence as the current version of the GOP stirs up its base to believe you are in an existential war with your neighbors and fellow-citizens who are Democrats, which generally means they have different views of how taxpayer money should be spent, like more on food, housing, and medical care for those who cannot afford it, rather than pouring all of it into defense and securing a border that realistically never can be fully secured and any reasonable GOP member knows that. Eisenhower was a GOP pres and obviously a war hero, but he warned the nation about pouring its wealth and priorities into endless supplies of weapons while people go hungry, don’t have housing, and cannot get medical care. Millions of square miles simply cannot be fully secured, and there never will be a shortage of mostly good people who want to come here for a better life, and most of them do contribute and don’t harm anyone. that doesn’t stop GOP candidates from warning that white Christian America is being overrun by people who look different and bring different ideas into the country. Being a melting pot used to be an American value. The GOP sees it as a threat to its “base” and we should build a wall like East Berlin. And yes, we always have had immigrants to who come legally and illegally. There are a few bad actors in both categories, but the majority in both categories are good people who are looking for opportunity and a way to fulfill their dreams. They add richness to our nation and its remarkable story as a bastion of freedom and opportunity, you know, the beacon on the hill analogy from Ronald Reagan, who compassionately gave amnesty to millions of immigrants.
