I think it hurt a bit in a few ways
First, it hurt their actual teams. They didn't get the practice and improvement they otherwise would. Helped enable BYU to run through them the next year.

It also hurt fan enthusiasm and attendance by putting everything on hold for a year and then giving them an inferior product when they resumed.

Third, it signaled to providers that those schools and their fans are less committed.
