Exposure was key imo and BYU did what most schools could not
They maintained great ratings even against mostly crappy home opponents, they have their own production truck and TV crew, and they always run conservatively in the black so they weren't going to bleed money like these other dummies (Cal).

IIRC, BYU gave ESPN a discount for the right to rebroadcast the games on KBYU right after the ESPN broadcast.
