This is actually one of my favorite themes of the books. Pity. The classic line
About don't be so quick to doll out judgement wishing someone should've died. It was Bilbo and frodos pity that saved gollums life, which then ultimately because of gollum the ring was destroyed. Also sam is the true hero.
