If he hasn't picked out a route yet, I'd highly recommend the Erie canal trail
It's pancake flat. I took my son there to do his 50 miler for his biking merit badge. The total elevation gain (not net, but total) was something like 200 feet or something ridiculous like that.
It's a pretty area up by Rochester NY. You can do loops on it and it connects to other rail trails as well.
