TL, DR: Utah, Oklahoma St and possibly Arizona (depending on if their QB takes advantage of COVID year) offer Wilson the chance to play right away, with long term competition from similarly rated recruit (with similar eligibility). BYU he'd have short term competition from a more experienced player (Retzlaff), but long-term competition is the weakest (by recruit rating). Arizona St and (especially) UCLA have long term young studs who are likely blocking the path to playing time. All this is Les important with the ease of transferring though
BYU
Current Starter: Kedon Slovis, 6th year RS COVID Senior (1 year to play 1)
Possible competition:
-
- Jake Retzlaff (3 years to play 2, so possibly will only have 1 year left when Wilson arrives)
- Ryder Burton (True Freshman, likely to RS and have all eligibility remaining)
Takeaway: Wilson would come in as a true freshman with no entrenched starter. Even if he doesn't win the job immediately (and Retzlaff does), it would likely only be one RS year until he gets another shot - long term competition is Ryder Burton (84.64 recruit rating)
Arizona
Current Starter: Jayden de Laura, 4th year COVID Junior (3 years to play 2)
Possible Competition:
-
- Noah Fifita (4 years to play 4, 87.37 recruit rating)
- Brayden Dorman (5 years to play 4, will likely RS, 89.79 recruit rating)
Takeaway: de Laura has eligibility remaining but may be gone by the time Wilson arrives or the year after at latest. Stronger long-term competition than at BYU, but from players with similar ratings/experience as Wilson will have.
Arizona St
Current Starter: Trenton Bourguet, 5th RS COVID Jr (2 years to play 2)
Possible Competition:
-
- Drew Pyne (RS, COVID Sophomore, 3 to play 3, 91.64 recruit rating)
- Jacob Conover (RS, COVID Sophomore, 3 to play 3, 90.06 recruit rating)
- Jaden Rashada (True Freshman, 5 to play 4, 96.23)
Takeaway: Bourguet isn't the issue. He's currently listed as QB1, but most expect Pyne (or Rashada) to have the job by Fall. Lots of young competition. That said, if Rashada wins the job as a true freshman (possible), then he'll potentially only be there 3 years which means an opening for Wilson as a RS Soph
Oklahoma St
Current Starter: Alan Bowman, 6th year RS COVID Senior (1 to play 1)
Possible Competition:
-
- Garret Rangel (RS Freshman, 4 to play 4, 89.06 recruit rating)
- Zane Flores (Freshman, 5 to play 4, 88.78 recruit rating, will likely RS and have all eligibility remaining)
Takeaways: Job is open after this year with no heir apparent. Oklahoma St is very high on Flores, but this would give Wilson the opportunity to compete as a true freshman and (if he loses) immediately know he needs to go elsewhere for an opportunity
UCLA
Current Starter: Ethan Garbers, COVID Junior (3 years to play 2)
Possible Competition:
-
- Dante Moore (Freshman, 5 to play 4, 99.77 recruit rating)
Takeaways: Could maybe list a few other names, but this one is all about Moore. Either Moore wins the starting job this year and plays 3 before going NFL (meaning Wilson gets a shot as a RS Soph) or he sits (maybe even redshirts) this year and blocks Wilson longer (unless Moore transfers?) Probably the toughest situation to come into
Utah
Current Starter: Cam Rising, 6th year RS COVID Senior (1 year to play 1)
Possible Competition:
-
- Brandon Rose (RS Freshman, 4 to play 4, 87.93 recruit rating)
- Nate Johnson (RS Freshman, 4 to play 4, 91.24 recruit rating)
- Mack Howard (Freshman, 5 to play 4, 87.44 rating)
Takeaways: Much like BYU, this job is WIDE open after this year. Lots of talented young guys (some of whom likely transfer) but Wilson would have the opportunity to either play immediately as a true freshman ... or immediately know he should transfer
