…issues and biases added in on top. See 12, PAC, for one such example.
As has been well documented here, when at least 3 of your schools’ student bodies feel totally cool chanting bleep the Mormons in a nationally televised game, while having Mormons on your own team and/or sideline while said chant is taking place, you have issues.
When you love to simultaneously champion woke causes, and your students have no issue chanting bleep the Mormons in nationally televised games while you have Mormons on your own field and/or sidelines, well, your culture just plain sucks.
I was told how awful Autzen Stadium in Oregon would be. I probably walked a mile by myself in my BYU gear past their tailgate area after dropping our group by the BYU tailgate and parking the car. No issues. We had Oregon fans intermixed in the BYU section at the stadium. We cheered for our team, engaged with their fans, and had zero issues.
I think my experience was mostly dumb luck that I didn’t run into the worst of their bunch. A smaller portion probably had to do with how we engaged their fans, and even less, that we’re fairly big and a couple of our group (not me) look kinda mean. The game absolutely sucked, but my experience at Oregon was just fine beyond the actual football played by BYU.
Do I still think U of O, as well as many universities act as hypocrites re: who is worthy of the greatest sensitivity, who gets censored, and on whom it is open season? I sure do. But you can go there as a visitor, and meet some cool people, at least so long as your team rolls over and plays dead after the opening drive or two. I have found and expect similar experiences at most stadiums, even the cesspool in Salt Lake County (although the yewt percentage and culture there is something particularly special).
