Did the Allied forces bomb the machine gun nests prior to landing?

Also, the Airborne dropped behind enemy lines in the dark, why couldn't the troops storm the beach under similar conditions?

I ask these questions with respect to the fact I was never in the military, and our leaders during WWII knew what they were doing.

Darkness works both ways, hard to organize the inland push in the dark

Yes, lots of pre-attack bombing, you can see the craters at Pointe du Hoc
