His style of play clearly wasn't safe. It's not like they were totally ignorant
of the dangers of concussions, neck injury, & brain damage back then. Far from it.
Very, very few guys put their head & neck in constant risk like Dustin did. Spearing a defender was something he did EVERY chance he got. And he looked to get maximum leverage behind it every time.
