I did that when all my kids served missions and all were able to get Pell grants
When they returned to school. They had gone 2 years with no income and not being claimed as a dependent.

Not sure if the fafsa form has changed from 15 years ago but the key thing is that I did not have to include my income on their application so they looked like the poorest among us.

When they get married they almost instantly qualify for Pell grants if they haven’t made a ton of money working.
