In an average year there are 8 upsets in the 1st round, but 3-4 of those are of
the 9 over 8 and 10 over 7 variety which are more toss-up games meaning 4 or 5 upsets with 11 seeds or worse. This year there were 3 11 seeds, 2 12 seeds, and 1 13 seed who won in the 1st round so 1st round upsets were close to average but slightly above.

The difference is with the 2nd round. Most years you'd expect at least one and sometimes two 1 or 2 seeds knocked out by the sweet 16, but this year all 8 advanced. Outside of that is kind of normal with two 5 seeds, one 6 seed, and one 11 seed in the sweet 16.

Overall that means 1 more upset than normal in 1st round, but 1-2 fewer upsets than normal in 2nd round.
