Had the exact same experience and have just been sitting here asking myself the
last two weeks "what on earth?"
I am sure the math has been done and it doesn't work, but I can't help but ask why isn't as simple as every household gets X dollars before they pay anything and every dollar after that is taxed at Y percent? Our tax system is most definitely broken.

If you simplify the tax code then you just make it easier to avoid taxes. The only real way to fix it is to get rid of
