Pope left because his career goal was bigger than what we can deliver, namely:
- Coach at his alma mater
- Opportunity to make millions more
- In the discussion for an NC every 3-5 years
- Compete for better players with more NIL dollars than we will ever provide
- Coach more future NBA players
- Fulfill a major career goal
You can't get THERE (see above) from HERE (BYU).
Personally, I'm happy for him. I would guess that most people on this board, if they had the exact same situation, would take the same course of action.
If we don't want a coach to leave so often, we should probably recruit someone with local ties or had played for BYU, that is fiercely loyal, okay with getting less than many other D1 coaches, and has high goals, but is also okay with having 20+ win years and making the sweet 16 occasionally. We are what we are...and I love BYU Basketball.
